🔥 Hot Takes Tuesday for 2025-06-10
💰 + 🤖 Funding for AI in search and security continues but on a long enough timeline they will likely converge.

Techmeme: London-based Maze, which uses AI agents to stop cloud security breaches, launches with $31M in total funding, including a $25M Series A led by Theory Ventures (Chris Metinko/Axios)

Techmeme: Generative AI enterprise search startup Glean raised a $150M Series F led by Wellington, taking its valuation to $7.2B, up from $4.6B in September 2024 (Afshan Musani/CNBC)

🤪 Wacky Wednesday for 2025-06-11
Each Wednesday I then select the most interesting shared link from dozens of Slack communities. This will always be a safe for work link. 🙈

The Untold Story of New Year’s Novelty Glasses
Three decades ago, two stoner musicians designed a product whose cheap imitations sold into the billions — but today, nobody knows their names
🔙 Throwback Thursday for 2025-06-12
🤖 + 🕸️ One story caught my eye this week was the growth in AI crawlers that are gathering instant results for users of various alternatives to web search. Some coverage uses the “bot” name as an inside baseball style reference to robots.txt.

Techmeme: TollBit: traffic from RAG bots, which scrape information in real time, to 266 websites, half of which are from news outlets, grew 49% from Q4 2024 to Q1 2025 (Nitasha Tiku/Washington Post)
By Nitasha Tiku / Washington Post. View the full context on Techmeme.
As for “bots”, if you look back at coverage of early web crawlers, there are some familiar patterns. 20 years ago, coverage of Google Base was mixed but provided a roadmap for where the increasingly machine readable web was heading.

✅ Final Thoughts Friday for 2025-06-13
☁️ + 🚨 The story that caught my eye this week was the still newsworthy nature of a cloud scale outage.

Techmeme: Google Cloud suffered an outage on Thursday, affecting many of its customers; Cloudflare, Spotify, Discord, Snapchat, and others experienced service disruptions (Maxwell Zeff/TechCrunch)

Back in the ancient times of 2021, I wrote this piece on the theme of Cloud in Public: Status Dashboards

🔮 Sneak Peak Saturday for 2025-06-14
Ah, the Friday news dump. By Friday, everything seems to be reaching the peak of getting news turned in before a deadline or dread-line.
Peak 🏔️ vs. Peek 👀
Then there is a trope, cliché, or bromide about slow news days and the quietly mentioned news updates sent on a Friday — to try and sneak it past wider coverage. Or, in a nutshell, peak patronizing publishing.
🤔 🤨 🧐 Just a couple that caught my technologist eye…

Techmeme: Some users say ChatGPT led them into conspiratorial thinking, and when confronted, it confessed to manipulation and told them to alert OpenAI and the media (Kashmir Hill/New York Times)
By Kashmir Hill / New York Times. View the full context on Techmeme.

Techmeme: Sources: the US DOJ is reviewing whether Google's planned $32B acquisition of cybersecurity company Wiz would illegally limit competition in the market (Josh Sisco/Bloomberg)
